1st XV Power to Opening League Win

The OG’s started this year’s league campaign in style with an excellent win over some strong opposition. The short journey was soon out of the Wellingborough based team who started very physically, playing into the wind in the first half the OG’s knew it was going to be tough, but they flew out of the blocks with some strong tackling forcing swifts backwards causing them to infringe and give away penalties, With the strong wind in their faces the OG’s pack took quick tap penalties and were making excellent ground. But eventually swifts were able to clear their lines and put the Og’s back into there own 22.

The old boys were now starting to dominate the game and swifts were constantly conceding penalties for not retiring ten metres and as usual were starting to get very aggressive and soon enough the punches were being thrown resulting in the hooker from Bedford being sin binned. With only 14 men on the pitch the OG’s pressed there advantage home and Skipper Armitage went under the posts after the OG’s pack had made the hard yards. Armitage added the extras and the OG’s had played out of their skins to turn round 7-0 up.

The second half was easier for the old boys as the wind was at there back and this time they could clear their lines with ease and with their line out working well were spoiling the ball swifts were receiving. This led to Armitage scoring again, the og’s were now dominating all round the park and with the swifts scrum starting to feel the pressure; sloppy ball was thrown to the fly half to clear but Armitage charged it down and scored his second. The really rocked the Bedford team who threw everything at the old boys but using the wind effectively the old boys cleared there lines with ease. Swifts were now desperate for the ball and started giving penalties away; Armitage put one over to put the OG’s in an unassailable position 15-0 up with 15 minutes left on the clock.

Swifts managed to score something of a consolation with about 12 minutes left to play, a good break led to a penalty which was tapped before the Wellingborough team good react and a swifts player scrambled over the line. This gave the swifts team a new lease of life but this was soon quashed when Armitage finished his points tally with a drop goal. Leaving the OG’s with an excellent start to the season and 2 hard earned points in the league.
