Easy cup win for 1st XV

Wellingborough OG's 63 Old Nottinghamians 3

The 1st team played Old Nottinghamians in the 1st round of the cup and as far as form went, they were a bit of an unknown quantity. But the scoreline told its own story as the Old boys breezed past the opposition to go into the next round. Playing at home , the old boys got off to a tentative start,a nd made some silly mistakes which let the oppostion in, and they susequently scored a penalty to go 3 -0 up. This basically awoke a sleeping giant and the Old Boys set about tearing into the heart of the opposition with some lovely interplay between backs and forwards, and the halfbacks having an armchair ride with good quality ball from the forwards, particularly from the scrummaging whereby they pushed the opposition back almost at will. This game gave the opportunity for players to shine, and there were some good individual performances, most notably from Brad "bad boy" Burridge(making his 1st team debut), scrum-half Nik Brown, Ashley Beppe Fenn, and "Slim Jim" Gavin James. Playing uphill and against the wind in the first half, the old Boys looked to dominate and bully the opponents at every opportunity, and this led to the visitors making mistake after mistake and contributing to their own downfall.

it was no surprise that by half time , the Old Boys were 24 -3 up, and in the second half, the floodgates opened. The oppositioin just could not deal with the speed of recycling and support play. In all 10 tries were scored with 3 coming from James hinde and 3 from Sean davies, closely followed by singles from Nik Brown, hooker Andrew Wetherill, skipper Armitage and centre Gavin james with Armitage supplying the conversions. A good workout for the Old Boys who resume league action against Oundle next week.
