Half Century For the Old Boys

Wellingborough OG's 55 Corby 0

The Old Grammarians went about the destruction of a poor Corby team with patches of excellent rugby. With the Old Boys needing to improve their points different it was always going to be a question of 'how many'. The forwards started strongly driving forward with pace and power, with Corby on the back foot it became apparent that the only way they could stop the Old Boys scoring was with persistent infringements. With the forward sucking in the opposition with their excellent driving play it was inevitable the backs would benefit from the open space out wide. The first try came from an a half break from Richard Armitage who offloaded to Gavin James who crashed over from 10yards. Richard Armitage adding the simplest of conversions. The next try was created by the forward pressure getting a penalty and Brian King taking a quick tap and crashing from short range. Then came the best move of the first half with forward again driving forward before the ball passing through several pairs of hands including a sensational off load from Alex Yates to put Stuart Arscott in for the third try. Richard Armitage again adding the conversion. James Hinde continued his excellent scoring record with another try before half time with the score at 24-0 at half time.

The 2nd half followed a similar pattern to the first with the OG's continually camped in the opposition half. Steve Brierley starred in the 2nd half scoring a 2nd half hatrick. The best move saved to last when Richard Armitage broke blind drew the last man and fed the ball to Steve Brierley who raced over from 50yards. Other tries came from Gavin James and Stuart Arscott both completing their brace. The final score was a convincing 55-0 blighted by one of the opposition being sent off for persistent foul play. All in all an excellent job done by the Old Boys in a totally one sided game.

The seconds took on Kettering 4ths at home on Saturday, a few late changes included Pete Moore on the wing while Sean Elston propped. The ogs had a convincing win, Skipper Luke Saunders scoring a brace as did Pete Moore and Lee Johnson. Chris Simms, Gary Craddock, Carl Hanley, and PJ added tries. Gary Craddock converted 5. Final score OGs 60- Kettering 0
